Many times a Union Representative may wonder: "Just what am I a Part of?" The answer is extensive, so we will try to answer in the most logical format possible.
Our Union is a Part of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) The AFL-CIO represents most of all labor in the United States. One of the Federal Wings of the AFL-CIO is Our wing the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). As AFGE covers most federal agencies they developed: "Bargaining Councils" A bargaining council has the authority and autonomy to deal with management in their respective agencies. This means that A Council is equal to an agency.
Our Bargaining Council is the National Council of SSA Field Operations Locals Which has it's own structure. Our Bargaining Council though is not completly representative of all SSA Employees. We are primarily responsibile for Field Offices and the Teleservice Centers. We are a part of the General Committee (which is representative of almost all of SSA Employees) These groups make up our overall bargaining council.
Inside of "Council 220" we have Regions, and the leaders of those regions. Inside of each region, you can have one or more locals which have areas of responsibilities. These Locals then take care of individual offices. These offices have reps.
